Sad Bedouin FLUTE floats quietly in the (B.g)

BLACK SCREEN
ROLL:

(V.O.)

In 1908, a group of high ranking Turkish
officers, called "Homeland and Freedom
Fighters" led a daring coup and toppled
the last Sultan in Constantinople, the
Capital of the Ottoman Empire "Sultan
Abdelhameed II". Their seven years
of harsh rule thereafter. Privy interests and
clandestine fellowships throughout the Middle
East, intimidating their Arab constituency,
imposing inhumane laws, confiscating cattle,
lands and homes, created chaotic lawless
society. The demise of what has became
Istanbul however, came on the hands
of the supreme knight of the Alhwetat tribe.
Oblivious to his destiny, the Bedouin, was
about to change the course of history
forever. His name was, Salamah Ben
Irtemah. And this is his true story...

FADE IN FROM BLACK
EXT. DESERT - DAY

The Bedouin FLUTE dissolves into sad REBAB song (Ajoh Joh Altheeb) and travels throughout the endless forsaken desert, with its magnificent contours of golden sand. The high noon sun blazes down on its ocean of dunes. Suddenly, a speeding unidentified object approaches, creating a huge sandstorm over the thick mirage at the hazy horizon

SUPER: The Negev Desert, Palestine. Apr. 29, 1915

EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD - MOMENTS LATER

As the Rebab SONG continues, and in an unpaved little track, surrounded by a few old clay houses, several Bedouin lads are playing soccer with a ball made out of cloth, surrounded by a group of little boys and girls cheering for Awad. AD LIB.

Awad, a little lad with a white skull cap, and dressed in traditional Bedouin garb for boys. Commands the ball.

A little girl, wearing traditional black dress with golden designs around the chest area, cheering for Awad

NOAF
Go, Awad, go...Watch out Awad, go, go, go...

Awad, looks at Noaf, smiles as he passes a few opponents to score.
Noaf, Along with the crowd, jumps up in cheers. AD LIB
.

EXT. DESERT - MOMENTS LATER

Bedouin, lonely old man, seated on a cape to protect him from the burning sand, wearing a thick black goatskin coat over his shoulders, to shields him from the blazing sun, playing his Rebab. The sheepherder continues SINGING (Ajoh joh Etheeb).

At the horizon, however. The shadow moving toward us (The screen) appears to be a speeding German military jeep of that era, with three men on board. It passes a flock of vultures eating decomposed prey, not too far from the singing old man.

JEEP

OSMAN, baby-faced, Turkish military Lieutenant, in his mid-twenties seated behind a Corporalو driving the convertible. Next to...

A Bedouin man, in his early fifties, with black dyed pointed goatee. Wearing Bedouin attire, and shoveling his nervous fingers through a chain of beads (Mesbaha).

AFNAN

Vultures
.

Rubbing his left thumb over the shining head of a stick with a smooth brass polished surface. Without looking and with arrogant gesture.

OSMAN

What?

AFNAN
I said, the hunting season has begun.

NEIGHBORHOOD - LATER
Awad, Caught up in the soccer game, runs after the out-of-bound-ball, picks it up, unaware of the approaching vehicle.

NOAF

(Screams)
Awad
.

The military jeep comes to a screeching halt along with the MUSIC.
Stares at Osman as he stands one thin hair’ distance away from the front grill of the convertible jeep. Holding the ball, and in slow motion, drops it. Runs away toward a distinguished old clay fenced house with an old arched gate and sun washed blue wooden gate. Shouting.

AWAD

Yoba, yoba, aljayeesh alturkey, aljaeesh alturkey, yoba.
(Father, Father, the
Turkish army, the Turkish army, Father
)

The jeep slowly trails him.

INT. LIVING ROOM - LATER

Through the light smoke coming from the blackened little metal grill in the middle of the room, with flamed natural wooden coal burning under a blanket of ashes, and a black stained brass coffee pot in the middle of it.
A dark skinned man, in his late fifties with gray
goatee, wearing Bedouin attire, is leaning on a stack of pillows, hosting the grim faced pair.

IRTEMAH

Welcome...welcome Sheik Afnan of Beersheba, and his guests, welcome...
(To Awad)
Yoba, Awad, serve the coffee.

Awad, Walks to the middle of the room, picks up the coffee pot and three small coffee cups, and starts serving the guests.
Osman, sitting on top of stack of pillows, waves the stick in an arrogant gesture, rejecting the coffee.
Afnan, takes the coffee cup and places it down. As is customary, he continues to flip the chain of beads between his fingers.
Notices the act. Disgusted.
IRTEMAH
Speak your mind man.
AFNAN
Your coffee is not hospitable, Sheik Irtemeh.
IRTEMAH
(Agitated)
Sit down son...
Awad, Returns the coffee pot to the grill. Clambers into his father's lap.
IRTEMAH
What’s on your mind man.
AFNAN
The dispute Sheik Irtemah, the dispute. I'm here...
Looks at Osman.
AFNAN
We're here to settle the dispute.
IRTEMAH
What dispute Sheik Afnan?
AFNAN
You know what I'm talking about, Sheik Irtemah.
IRTEMAH
You don’t mean the stores?
AFNAN
Yes the stores, the land -- your land Sheik Irtemah...
IRTEMAH
Let's talk about that next season, Afnan -- the spring has cleared the skies for us to rove east...upon the boys’ arrival.
AFNAN
That's why we're here Sheik Irtemah, we don't want to wait until next season. We don’t want to wait for the boys return either.
IRTEMAH
As I stated to you before -- more than once Afnan -- the stores are not for sale.
AFNAN
Sheik Irtemah.
IRTEMAH
Yes Afnan of Beersheba, yes -- From all of God's land -- look around you man, look, why my land?
AFNAN
It's on our turf Sheik Irtemah...
IRTEMAH
So? Its Al Irtemah stores...and it's not for sale, Afnan -- buy another one.
AFNAN
I don't want another one, Sheik -- we don't want another one...
Looks at the Lieutenant.
AFNAN
We want your land Sheik Irtemah.
Gently, massaging his son's head.
IRTEMAH
Well, you can't have my land Afnan, it's not for sale -- right Glorious Eyes?
Nods with excitement.
AWAD
That’s right.
AFNAN
(Stands up)
You know darn well, that...not you...your boys, nor all of the Alhwetat clan can stand in the face of the Ottoman Empire.
Still playing with his son's hair.
IRTEMAH
We know how powerful your connections are Afnan...
(Looks at Osman)
It shows -- But neither you, nor your connections can coerce me...
Kisses Awad's head.
IRTEMAH
To cede my land Afnan.
AFNAN
You'll regret it Sheik.
IRTEMAH
Regret what Afnan of Beersheba?
Pushes Awad away gently.
IRTEMAH
Regret what? You cannot match my noble blood, nor can you defeat my army, with your...your connections -- Regret what Afnan? Regret what?

LATER
AFNAN
(As he leaves)
You'll pay a dear price Irtemah. A very dear price.
IRTEMAH
Reason man...reason -- Not you, nor all of Beersheba and the whole Turkish army behind them, are match to Allah's wrath.
Stops at the door.
AFNAN
This is your last chance Irtemah.
IRTEMAH
You know better than to threaten a righteous man Afnan -- Allah is with the righteous.
AFNAN
I didn't come all the way here under the blazing Negev sun to hear a lecture from you about Allah old man -- You have until the evening prayer...Period.
Irtemah, laughing hysterically.
Awad, joins him in laughter.
AFNAN
(Agitated)
The heat must have gone to your head old man. What's so funny?
IRTEMAH
You.
AFNAN
Me?
IRTEMAH
(Laughing)
Right Awad...

His face instantly changes from happy to grouchy as he looks at Afnan.
IRTEMAH
Yes...you.
AFNAN
What about me?
IRTEMAH
I can foresee you, in the female's harem, begging for your life.
Osman, standing behind Afnan.
Angry.
AFNAN
Damn the man who would make me beg old man.

EXT. DESERT - EVENING
Dark skinned man's eye comes to focus as he aims his bow and arrow.
SALAMAH
Besm Allah, Allah O Akber.
(In the name of God, God is great.)
Lets fly an arrow. At lightening speed the arrow passes through the heart and body of a gazelle, and slams into a tree behind it.
A heavy set, dark skinned cousin of Salamah’ pearly teeth shines as he laughs.
KASEB SHADEED(CAMEL)
Missed Salamah -- You've missed.
Salamah, gives him a stern look that silences him instantly.
The oldest cousin of Salamah, with a scar on his left cheek, lying against a dried tree. Sharpening a dagger with a black volcanic stone.
RASHED NJAD (SCAR)
You need spectacles Kaseb, you need spectacles.
KASEB
Look Rashed, look -- it didn't even budge.
Rashed, throws the dagger at the gazelle. The dagger hits the dead gazelle and it falls.
Muscular cousin, unsaddling a horse, drops the saddle at the same time the dagger hits the gazelle.
TOOFAN OMRANI (SWEET TOOTH)
Because it went through it, you Camel...
SALAMAH
Sweet tooth.
TOOFAN
Yes sir.
SALAMAH
Gather the wood. Camel.
KASEB
Yes Cousin.
SALAMAH
Get the prey. Scar.
RASHED
Yes Salamah.
SALAMAH
Light the fire.

LATER
As they walk toward the Gazelle.
KASEB
I’m sick and tired of being the youngest man...
Bounces his big belly.
KASEB
It should be by weight not age. C'mon Toofan, let's go -- I thought he missed...

EXT. IRTEMAH'S NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT
The only sounds disturbing the solitude of the night, illuminated by a full moon, are the sound of crickets CHIRPING and the panting of fear and anxiety coming from a group of masked men, sneaking up and down the sleeping neighborhood near Irtemah's clay fenced house, as they’re guarded by Turkish soldiers.

INT. BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER
Awad, with his customary white skull cap. Sound asleep.
A snake tattooed on the back of a right hand slams against Awad's mouth.
Awad, abruptly awakened, with terrified eyes popping with terror, looks at the masked man’s face.
Masked man leaning over the little lad, with his gun pressed to the side of Awad’s head.
KHALID
Shhh. Don’t move.
Presses the gun against the lad’s head closer.
KHALID
I’ll kill you.

EXT/INT. GARDEN - LATER
Awad, terrified. Kneeled, hands bound behind his back.
Presses his gun to the side of Awad's skull cap.
KHALID
This is your last chance old man, your son's fate is in your hands, what do you say?
Two masked men are forcing him to kneel near his wife and teenage daughter, to no avail. As his daughter is held down by a pair of masked men. Resists.
IRTEMAH
I'm not the one to dictate his fate...
Points his head up toward the sky.
IRTEMAH
He does.
KHALID
And I'll decide it, if you don't cede old man.
Irtemah's daughter, a young lady, held by a gunman, distraught. Looks at her father, and brother. Shouts.
SALHA
Pull your shoulders up and sit like a man.
Awad, scared. Pulls his shoulders up.
Mother, Distraught, desolate.
KHALID
What do you say old man?
IRTEMAH
Do as you wish, dead man.
AREF
Old man, say yes, please, it's just land, say yes -- he'll do it, do you understand -- please -- I beg of you.
(To Khalid)
Don't do it Khalid, don't do it.
IRTEMAH
Man stands alone before Allah. You harm my tad and I'll make sure every man carries your filthy bloodline is dead... everybody -- that is a promise.
Pushes Aref away. Removes his turban to reveals his face.
KHALID
Move, Aref.
Aref, Manages not to fall.
Khalid, Shoves his gun to the side of Awad's head, looks at Irtemah.
Awad, Looks at his father, terrified.
Khalid, With his gun to the side of Awad's head, shoots.
MOTHER (O.C.)
(Shouts)
Oh my God...
Awad, a SHOT rings out. His little body jerks; a gout of blood spreads its deadly bloom from the right side of his head, through the shreds of the white skull cap; its live force spatters the ground; the velocity of the bullet, forces his tiny body, in slow motion, to crumple. As he collapses on his right side in an extreme close-up. His head bounces on the dirt, then slowly settles down; his lifeless eyes stare at us (the screen). Then as if he seems to be weeping, a stream of blood runs down across his innocent face to the inside corner of his upper eye and continues its journey over his little nose, and start dripping on the dirt like tears.

SUBLIM SHOT
EXT. DESERT - MOMENTS LATER
The sudden life in the dying fire next to him, sends a huge flame that awakens him from his sleep with startle. The reflection of the flame in his pupils, tell of the rage.
SALAMAH
Ha!

EXT/INT. GARDEN - MOMENTS LATER
In slow motion. Her face bears witness to the horror of her child's death. Her (MOS.) Scream shatter the deadly silence. Her knees give way and crumples.
MOTHER
(MOS.)
My baby...
Irtemah, bewildered.
Khalid, Distraught.
Aref, roughs Khalid up.
Her scream returns as she crumbles over her brother’s dead body.
SALHA
Ahhhh.
All run away as the sad MUSIC continues.

LATER
Bewildered to his son's body.
IRTEMAH
No strength but the might of Allah, Allah is my shepherd...
Mother, lying on the floor with her hair tangled and her dress torn. Sobbing.
SALHA
(Holding his body)
Awad, my heart, my soul, my little brother -- Awad...
HYMNS, as he dips his hands in Awad's blood and smears it all over his head and face.
IRTEMAH
Layed his eyes to sleep
And stretches his hand
To be hennad...
(Cry)
Your blood, your blood my boy, henna to my head...
Heartsick, he closes his eyes in pain and stretches out his hands.
IRTEMAH
We shall henna our feet with their blood...
Grabs his headscarf and attempts to wrap it around his face.
Jumps up, tries to grab the headscarf.
SALHA
No, father, noooo....
IRTEMAH
I shall never speak, until you're avenged the worst revenge the Arab has ever known.
Wraps the bottom half of his face including the mouth, with his scarf.
Rocking as she pulls her hair and dress, sobbing. Her soundless heartfelt scream, RESOUNDS throughout the quiet place. Shouts.
SALHA
Salamah.
